A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4694 AS INTRODUCED 4-28-05
House Bill 4694 would amend Public Act 372 of 1927, which concerns the regulation of firearms, to allow an employee of the State of Michigan or a political subdivision of the state (e.g., a local unit) who is required by employment to perform inspections on private property to carry a concealed weapon while on that private property, if the employee is licensed to carry the weapon.
Currently under the law, an employer cannot prohibit an employee from receiving a license to carry a concealed pistol or from carrying a concealed pistol in compliance with a license. However, an employer can prohibit an employee from carrying the pistol in the course of employment. House Bill 4694 would say that notwithstanding that authority of an employer, a government employee conducting inspections on private property can carry a concealed weapon while on that private property.
(The act also says that a police agency can prohibit an employee from carrying a concealed pistol if it would result in increased insurance premiums or a loss or reduction of insurance coverage for the employer. The bill does not appear to affect this provision.)
