PHYSICAL EXAM: ADOPTIVE PARENT H.B. 5247 (H-1): FLOOR ANALYSIS
House Bill 5247 (Substitute H-1 as reported without amendment)
Sponsor: Representative Barbara Vander Veen
House Committee: Health Policy
Senate Committee: Health Policy
CONTENT
The bill would amend the Michigan Adoption Code to require a prospective adoptive parent to undergo a physical examination by a physician, physician's assistant, or certified nurse practitioner.
Specifically, a child placing agency would have to request an individual seeking a preplacement assessment to undergo a physical examination conducted by a licensed physician or physician's assistant, or a certified nurse practitioner, to determine that the individual was free from any known condition that would affect his or her ability to care for an adoptee. If an individual had had a physical examination within the 12 months immediately before requesting a preplacement assessment, he or she could submit a medical statement that was signed and dated by the physician, physician's assistant, or nurse practitioner verifying that he or she had had the examination and was free from any known condition that would affect his or her ability to care for an adoptee.
