DRIVER'S LICENSE RENEWAL: ACTIVE DUTY H.B. 6346: FLOOR ANALYSIS

House Bill 6346 (as reported without amendment)
Sponsor: Representative Kevin Elsenheimer
House Committee: Transportation
Senate Committee: Transportation

CONTENT
The bill would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to provide for a waiver of the late fee for the renewal of an expired operator's license for a person on active military service.
Under the Code, the renewal fee for an operator's license is $18. If the license is expired at the time of the renewal, however, the fee is the same as the fee for an original operator's license, which is $25.

Under the bill, a person who was on active military service when his or her license expired would have to be charged the renewal rate for renewing the license if all of the following applied:

-- He or she applied for renewal within 30 days of returning to this State from active duty.
-- He or she held a valid, unexpired operator's license from Michigan immediately before leaving the State for active military service.
-- He or she presented such documentation as the Secretary of State required to establish eligibility under the bill.
