A bill to allow public officials to elect not to receive
compensation for serving in their elected or appointed positions.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 1. (1) Upon written notice to the legislative body of the
village, city, township, or county in which a person serves as a
public official, the person may elect not to receive compensation
for serving as a public official.
(2) As used in this act:
(a) "Legislative body" means any of the following:
(i) The council, commission, or other entity vested with the
legislative power of a village.
(ii) The council or other entity vested with the legislative
power of a city.
(iii) The township board of a township.
(iv) The county board of commissioners of a county.
(b) "Public official" means a person who is elected or
appointed to any of the following:
(i) A public office of a city, village, township, or county in
this state.
(ii) A department, board, agency, institution, commission,
authority, division, council, or other public entity of a city,
village, township, or county in this state.
