A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled
"The revised school code,"
(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1168.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 1168. (1) If a school district or public school academy
provides a computer or information technology course or curriculum,
then beginning with the 2007-2008 school year the board of the
school district or board of directors of the public school academy
shall ensure that the course or curriculum includes instruction on
internet safety. The instruction shall be designed to increase
pupil awareness of the risks of sharing personal information on the
internet and to ensure that pupils know how to protect themselves
if they are approached inappropriately through the internet.
(2) Not later than June 1, 2007, the department shall develop
or select model programs and materials on internet safety that are
appropriate for the purposes of this section and shall make those
model programs and materials available to school districts and
public school academies.
