A bill to amend 1949 PA 300, entitled
"Michigan vehicle code,"
(MCL 257.1 to 257.923) by adding section 307b.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 307b. (1) Beginning June 1, 2006, when any male citizen
of the United States or a male immigrant to the United States who
is less than 26 years of age applies for an operator's license or
chauffeur's license, the secretary of state shall obtain the
information and consent from that individual that is necessary to
register the individual with the federal selective service system
in compliance with the requirements of 50 USC Appx 453, including,
but not limited to, the individual's social security number.
(2) By submitting an application described in subsection (1),
a person gives his consent to the secretary of state to be
registered by the federal selective service system if so required
by federal law. Each form used for an application described in
subsection (1) shall include a statement that the submission of the
application serves as the applicant's consent to be registered with
the federal selective service system if so required by federal law.
The form shall also contain the following statement: "If under the
age of 18, I understand that I will be registered when I attain the
age of 18 if so required by federal law.".
(3) The secretary of state shall forward the information
obtained under subsection (1) to the federal selective service
system in a format consistent with selective service system
requirements.
Enacting section 1. This amendatory act takes effect June 1,
2006.
