Senate Bill 630 (as reported without amendment)
Sponsor: Senator Ron Jelinek
Committee: Transportation

Date Completed: 10-29-07

RATIONALE

A portion of M-62 in Cass County previously was known as the "Veteran's Memorial Highway", as indicated by signs along the roadway. Evidently, those signs were taken down a few years ago, and it was discovered that the designation had never been officially made. To allow the signs to be replaced in honor and memory of veterans, it has been suggested that the highway be named in statute as the Veteran's Memorial Highway.

CONTENT
The bill would amend the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate highway M-62 in Cass County from the eastern city limit of Dowagiac to the western city limit of Cassopolis as the "Veteran's Memorial Highway".

Proposed MCL 250.1093

ARGUMENTS (Please note: The arguments contained in this analysis originate from sources outside the Senate Fiscal Agency. The Senate Fiscal Agency neither supports nor opposes legislation.)

Supporting Argument Veteran's memorial highways serve to remind motorists of the sacrifices that military men and women have made in the service of their country. Reportedly, the portion of M-62 between Dowagiac and Cassopolis previously was known as the Veteran's Memorial Highway, although that designation had not been made officially. By placing that designation in statute, the bill would restore the road's status as a tribute to those veterans who sacrificed their lives while serving in the military.
