House Bill 6232 (as discharged)
Sponsor: Representative Andy Neumann
House Committee: Ethics and Elections
Senate Committee: Campaign and Election Oversight

CONTENT
The bill would amend the Michigan Election Law to allow the board of a school district to change its regular election to the general November election, if the board holds its regular election for school board members at the odd-year general election. The board could make this change by adopting a resolution in compliance with the Law.

After December 31 of the year in which the resolution was adopted, the district would have to hold its regular election at the general November election.

FISCAL IMPACT
The bill would have no fiscal impact on the State.

School districts currently holding stand-alone odd-year general elections for school board members that chose to change their elections to the general November election would see savings. This would occur because other local units of government pay the bulk of the costs for November general elections; the school district could be charged for the slight minimal cost of adding onto the November ballot, but the cost would be far less than the cost of a stand-alone election. Typically, school board elections can cost between $25,000 and $50,000 if they are not combined with other elections.
