            House Resolution No. 182.

A resolution declaring November 2009 as Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, November 2009 is National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month; and

Whereas, Alzheimer’s is a disease of the brain that destroys brain cells. It causes  problems with memory, thinking and behavior. It is the most common form of dementia; and

Whereas, It is estimated that there are as many as 5.3 million people living with Alzheimer’s disease in the United States; and

Whereas, By 2010, there will be nearly a half million new cases of Alzheimer’s each year. By 2050, there will be nearly a million new cases annually; and

Whereas, There are over 170,000 people in Michigan with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia, and this number will grow dramatically with this decade if no cure is found; and

Whereas, The Alzheimer's Association is an organization dedicated to building a world without Alzheimer's. Its mission is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body recognize the month of November 2009 as Alzheimer's Awareness Month in the state of Michigan.
