Senator Bishop offered the following resolution:
Senate RResolution No. 72
____A resolution designating September 11- to September 17, 2009, as Michigan Patriots Week.
Whereas, tThe history and First Principles
of the United States of America should serve as the cornerstone of civic education., and iIn great
reverence to the victims of the 9/-11 attacks,
we acknowledge that American cCitizens must
take time to honor the principles, founders, documents, and symbols of their social
history; and,
Whereas, Tthe events
that lead to the signing
symbolic
adoption
of
Tthe
Constitution of the United States of America by the
delegates of the Constitutional Convention on
September 17, 1787, should
behave significancet to for every American
and are honored in public schools across the nation on
September
17 as Constitution Day; and,
Whereas,
Revolution, the
rRule of lLaw, the the sSocial cCompact, eGender
Equality, uUnalienable rRights, and Llimited Ggovernment are
the
First pPrinciples
upon which the
great United States America was founded was built;and flourishes; and,
Whereas, eExceptional, visionary,
and indispensable Americans
such as Thomas Paine, Patrick Henry, John Adams, John Marshall, George
Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King, Jr.unior, Elizabeth
Cady Stanton, Susan Anthony, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison served
the United States as visionariesfounded and advanced
the United States; and,
Whereas, tThe
Bennington Flag, the work of
Betsy Ross, the United StatesAmerican Flag, the Suffragist
Flag, the Union
Flag, the Gadsden
Flag, and the flag of the sState of Michigan
are key physical symbols of American history that should be studied and
remembered by each American Ccitizen;
now, therefore, be it
Whereas, we mark the first
day of Patriots Week, symbolically September 11, by honoring the plight of
those who fought in the American Revolution and the great manifesto that is the
Declaration of Independence, and,
Resolved by the Senate, That we hereby
designate September 11- to
September 17, 2009, as Michigan
Patriots Week,
symbolically beginning this celebration on September
9-11. and
concluding
on
Constitution
Day. We urge the citizens, government
agencies, municipalities,
businesses,
nonprofit organizations, and schools of the sState of
Michigan to
recognize
and
participate in this extended holiday by celebratinghonoring
and celebrating the First
Principles, key historical figures, founding documents, and symbols of American
exceptionalhistoryAmerica
[in
accordance with the schedule developed by Oakland County Circuit Court Judge
Michael Warren] so that they
may offer the reverence that is due to our free republic,; and be it
further
Resolved, That the copies of this resolution be
transmitted to the
Michigan Council for Social Studies, the Michigan Center for Civic Education,
the State Board of Education, Michigan public and
nonpublic schools, the SState Bar of Michigan, and
the Oakland
County Bar Association, the Oakland
County Circuit Court, Speaker of the House Andy Dillon, and Governor Jennifer
M. Granholm.
