A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4726 AS INTRODUCED 6-9-11

House Bill 4726 would amend the Michigan Employment Security Act to exempt wages earned by volunteer (part-paid) firefighters from the partial earnings offset provision in the act.

Under Section 27 of the act, if a claimant receives remuneration in a week, the claimants weekly benefit amount is reduced by $0.50 for each $1.00 earned or received during the week.

The bill adds that, if a volunteer firefighter earns less than $10,000 in a calendar year for that service, any remuneration received for on-call duty or training activities would not be used to offset the weekly benefit amount payable.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The bill would have no significant fiscal impact on the state Unemployment Trust Fund.
