LIMIT ON HOURS OF WORK FOR YOUTH
WHEN SCHOOL IS IN SESSION
House Bill 4732
Sponsor: Rep. Jim Stamas
Committee: Commerce
Complete to 6-20-11
A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4732 AS INTRODUCED 6-9-11
The bill would amend the Youth Employment Standards Act. Under that act, the number of hours that a 16- or 17-year-old can work is limited. With some exceptions, a person cannot employ a minor for more than any of the following: (1) 6 days per week; (2) an weekly average of 8 hours per day or 48 hours in one week; (3) 10 hours in one day; (4) for a student in school, while school is in session, a combined school and work week of 48 hours.
House Bill 4732 would amend the act to revise the limit on work hours for minors in school. The bill would eliminate the reference to a combined school and work week. Instead, the bill would specify that the student could not be employed for more than 24 hours in one week while school is in session.
