DELEGATION TO PHYSICIAN'S ASSISTANT S.B. 1145 (S-1):
FLOOR SUMMARY
Senate Bill 1145 (Substitute S-1 as reported)
CONTENT
The bill would amend the Public Health Code to do the following:
-- Eliminate language in Parts 170 (Medicine), 175 (Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery), and 180 (Podiatric Medicine and Surgery) restricting the number of physician's assistants (PAs) a physician or podiatrist may supervise, and instead prohibit a physician or podiatrist from supervising more PAs than he or she could supervise adequately.
-- Require a supervising physician or podiatrist who was absent to provide for appropriate supervision of a PA by another physician or podiatrist who was authorized to supervise that PA.
-- Revise provisions in Parts 170 and 175 related to the rules for a physician's delegation of drug prescription to a PA.
-- Include in Part 175 language that exists in Part 170 regarding the delegation of other duties to a PA.
The Code authorizes the Board of Medicine and the Board of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery to promulgate rules for a supervising physician's delegation to a PA of the function of prescribing drugs. Under the bills, this authority would be subject to related provisions of the Code.
