A bill to designate January 13 of each year as Korean American
Day in the state of Michigan.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 1. (1) The legislature recognizes the contributions that
the Korean American community has made throughout this state and
acknowledges their contributions in building and enhancing the
culture of our state and nation. The legislature honors the first
Korean immigrants who arrived in Hawaii on January 13, 1903, many
of whom later settled along the Pacific Coast as farm workers or
wage laborers in mining companies or section hands on the
railroads. The Korean American community has blossomed to a
population of nearly 2,000,000 in the United States, and the state
of Michigan is fortunate to be the home of a large concentration of
citizens who are of Korean descent. Korean Americans have made and
will continue to make great contributions to the economic and
cultural strength of this state.
(2) In recognition of the contributions that the Korean
American community has made, the legislature declares that January
13 of each year shall be known as "Korean American Day".
