SENATE BILL No. 1197

     A bill to amend 1954 PA 116, entitled

 

"Michigan election law,"

 

(MCL 168.1 to 168.992) by adding section 493a.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

 

     Sec. 493a. (1) Subject to subsections (2) and (3), the

 

secretary of state shall automatically register to vote each person

 

who meets the qualifications of an elector under section 492 and

 

who is issued either an operator's or chauffeur's license pursuant

 

to the Michigan vehicle code, 1949 PA 300, MCL 257.1 to 257.923, or

 

an official state personal identification card pursuant to 1972 PA

 

222, MCL 28.291 to 28.300.

 

     (2) For purposes of subsection (1), the secretary of state

 

shall only automatically register to vote a person who indicates on

 

his or her operator's or chauffeur's license application,


 

operator's or chauffeur's license renewal application, official

 

state personal identification card application, or official state

 

personal identification card renewal application that he or she is

 

a citizen of the United States.

 

     (3) The secretary of state shall not automatically register to

 

vote a person who declines in writing, on a form prescribed by the

 

secretary of state, to be registered to vote when he or she is

 

issued either an operator's or chauffeur's license pursuant to the

 

Michigan vehicle code, 1949 PA 300, MCL 257.1 to 257.923, or an

 

official state personal identification card pursuant to 1972 PA

 

222, MCL 28.291 to 28.300.

 

     (4) The secretary of state shall add any information required

 

under section 509q to the qualified voter file for each elector

 

registered pursuant to subsection (1) and shall forward the name of

 

each elector registered pursuant to this section to the clerk of

 

the city, township, or village in which each elector registered

 

resides.

 

     Enacting section 1. This amendatory act does not take effect

 

unless all of the following bills of the 96th Legislature are

 

enacted into law:
