A SUMMARY OF SENATE BILL 108 AS PASSED BY THE SENATE ON 3-13-13
The bill would amend the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate the portion of highway I-94 located in Kalamazoo County as the "Officer Eric Zapata Memorial Highway."
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
According to the Senate Fiscal Agency analysis, Officer Eric Zapata, a 10-year veteran of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, was killed in line of duty in April 2011 while in pursuit of a hostile gunman who had been exchanging gunfire with another officer. Office Zapata, a 35-year-old father of three, was the first KDPS officer killed in the line of duty.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Section 2 of the Michigan Memorial Highway Act indicates that the State Transportation Department shall only provide for the erection of suitable markers indicating the name of the highway "when sufficient private contributions are received to completely cover the cost of erecting and maintaining those markers." As a result, the bill has no state or local fiscal impact.
