A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4204 AS INTRODUCED 2-7-13
The bill would amend the Michigan Memorial Highway Act (MCL 250.1001 et al.) to specify the following:
o A state trunk line highway or a portion of a state trunk line highway could not have more than one name assigned under the act.
o A state trunk line highway or a portion of a state trunk line highway could only be named after a deceased individual who was one or both of the following: (1) a member of the United States Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard who died in the line of duty or (2) an officer employed by the Department of State Police who died in the line of duty.
o The portion of Highway M-71 within the village limits of the Village of Vernon (Shiawassee County) would be designated as the "Graham Barlow Jr., WWII Memorial Highway."
FISCAL IMPACT:
Section 2 of the Michigan Memorial Highway Act indicates that the State Transportation Department shall only provide for the erection of suitable markers indicating the name of the highway "when sufficient private contributions are received to completely cover the cost of erecting and maintaining those markers." As a result, the bill has no state or local fiscal impact
