CONTENT

 

The bill amends the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate Scott Lake Road in Oakland County as the "Trooper James R. DeLoach and Trooper Steven J. Niewiek Memorial Highway". The bill will take effect March 30, 2015.

BACKGROUND

 

Troopers James DeLoach and Steven Niewiek were the 42nd and 43rd Michigan State Police officers, respectively, to die in the line of duty.[1] They were both killed in a patrol car-train accident that occurred on Scott Lake Road in Waterford Township. The accident occurred on February 1, 1992, while the troopers were responding to a call for assistance at a nearby business.[2]
