YOUTH EMPLOYMENT EXCEPTION H.B. 4656:
SUMMARY OF HOUSE-PASSED BILL
IN COMMITTEE
House Bill 4656 (as passed by the House)
Sponsor: Representative Kate Segal
Senate Committee: Families, Seniors and Human Services
CONTENT
The bill would amend the Youth Employment Standards Act to provide that the Act would not apply to minors 16 years old or older who obtained a high school equivalency certificate.
The Act governs the employment of minors, provides for the issuance and revocation of work permits, prescribes the conditions and hours that minors are allowed to work, and prohibits the employment of minors in hazardous occupations. The Act does not apply to a minor 16 years old or older who has completed the requirements for graduation from high school. An employer, before employing the minor, must obtain and keep on file a certification from the school certifying that the minor completed the graduation requirements.
Under the bill, the Act also would not apply to a minor 16 years old or older who obtained a high school equivalency certificate. An employer would be required to obtain and keep on file a copy of the high school equivalency certificate before employing the minor.
