Reps. Darany, Barnett, Cavanagh, Driskell, Geiss, Heise, Howrylak, LaVoy, O'Brien and Slavens offered the following resolution:

House Resolution No. 232. 

            A resolution to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the invention of the moving assembly line.

            Whereas, The first functional moving assembly line was installed at Henry Ford's Highland Park plant on October 7, 1913; and

            Whereas, Divisible parts and the moving assembly line offered a continuous flow of work pieces that eventually cut the production of Model T automobiles from 12 hours to an hour and a half at peak production; and

            Whereas, The moving assembly line increased profit in the industry allowing Henry Ford to improve working conditions, such as raising the daily wages of the factory workers while decreasing the workday from 9 to 8 hours a day; and

            Whereas, Due to more automobiles being made at a lower production cost, the cost of Model T's dropped from $825 to $525 in 1914. The moving assembly line provided affordable automobiles for the average citizen and was a keystone in Henry Ford putting the world on wheels; and

            Whereas, The moving assembly line and divisible work force allowed Ford to produce automobiles at a record-breaking rate of one automobile every 49 seconds; and

            Whereas, The combination of the record breaking rate of production and the demand for Henry Ford's Model T led to over half of the automobiles owned in the United States in 1918 being made by Ford; and

            Whereas, Henry Ford's success enabled him to start construction on the Rouge Plant in Dearborn, Michigan in 1917. This was a stepping stone in employing more than 100,000 people at its peak in the 1930's, including a multi-station fire department, a police force, a fully staffed hospital, and a maintenance staff; and

            Whereas, The River Rouge plant created a foundation for a robust Michigan economy that has spread to every industrial nation and become the most familiar form of mass production; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body commemorate the 100th anniversary of the invention of the moving assembly line.
