SUMMARY:

Senate Bill 481 would amend the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate US-10 beginning at the intersection with Stark Road and extending west to River Road as the “Marine Lance Corporal Ryan Burgess Memorial Highway.”

Proposed MCL 250.1016a

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

According to information from the Senate Fiscal Agency, Lance Corporal Ryan Burgess was killed at the age of 21 on December 21, 2006, while serving his second tour of duty in Iraq. He was a graduate of Meridian High School in the Village of Sanford, Midland County. Following graduation, he completed one year of college before joining the United States Marine Corps. To honor his service and sacrifice, it has been suggested that a portion of highway US-10 should be named after Lance Corporal Burgess.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Section 2 of the Michigan Memorial Highway Act indicates that the state transportation department shall provide for the erection of suitable markers indicating the name of the highway only “when sufficient private contributions are received to completely cover the cost of erecting and maintaining those markers.” As a result, the bill has no state or local fiscal impact.

POSITIONS:

The Michigan Department of Transportation has no position on the bill.  (1-16-18)
