SUMMARY:

Senate Bill 618 would amend the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate the portion of Highway M-59 within Livingston County as the “Candice Dunn Memorial Highway.”

Proposed MCL 250.1012a

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

According to committee testimony and news reports, Michigan Department of Corrections employee Candice Dunn died in an automobile crash on May 9, 2017, on M-59 in Livingston County while returning from the Department's Employee Appreciation banquet, where she received a special honor. Ms. Dunn was the Department's 2017 Parole/Probation Agent of the Year, and a 12-year veteran with the Department who worked in the Eastern District Probation Office, in the Troy Probation Office, and as a drug court agent in Wayne County. She was also a criminal justice instructor at South University in Novi. Ms. Dunn was well-known throughout the department and was remembered for organizing holiday food drives for needy residents in the Pontiac area. Naming a portion of M-59 in her honor would recognize her service to the State of Michigan and her dedication to her community.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Section 2 of the Michigan Memorial Highway Act indicates that the state transportation department shall provide for the erection of suitable markers indicating the name of the highway only “when sufficient private contributions are received to completely cover the cost of erecting and maintaining those markers.” As a result, the bill has no state or local fiscal impact.
