JAMES BONDSTEEL MEMORIAL HIGHWAY

House Bill 4057 as introduced

Sponsor:  Rep. Eric Leutheuser

Committee:  Transportation and Infrastructure

Complete to 2-21-17

REVISED SUMMARY:

The bill would amend the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate the portion of highway US-12 within the city limits of the city of Jonesville as the "James Bondsteel Memorial Highway."

Proposed MCL 250.1007a

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

James Bondsteel was an army staff sergeant who received the Congressional Medal of Honor for "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty" during his service in Vietnam. According to information provided by the sponsor's office, he was born in Jackson, moved as child to Jonesville in Hillsdale County, where he graduated from high school.  Bondsteel subsequently died in Alaska in 1987.  The main army base in Kosovo is named in his honor.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Section 2 of the Michigan Memorial Highway Act indicates that the State Transportation Department shall only provide for the erection of suitable markers indicating the name of the highway "when sufficient private contributions are received to completely cover the cost of erecting and maintaining those markers." As a result, the bill has no state or local fiscal impact.
