Committee: Transportation and Infrastructure
Complete to 4-18-18
SUMMARY:
House Bill 5672 would amend the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate the portion of Highway M-15 in Oakland County beginning at the intersection of M-15 and Highway I-75 and extending north to the county line of Oakland and Genesee Counties as the “Deputy Eric Overall Memorial Highway.”
Proposed MCL 250.1003b
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
On November 23, 2017, officers began pursuing a vehicle in the parking lot of the Lapeer County Jail after the driver made threats against law enforcement. The pursuit traveled into Oakland County on I-69, where the vehicle exited on M-15 on Seymour Lake Road. Deputy Overall had gotten out of his car to deploy stop sticks and had taken a position well off the roadway. According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, the driver intentionally ran down Deputy Overall at about 12:30 a.m. The suspect’s vehicle flipped in the crash. Deputy Overall was killed by the suspect’s vehicle. Pursuing officers immediately took the suspect into custody. Deputy Eric Overall had served with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office for 22 years and was the first Oakland County deputy to die in the line of duty in 80 years. Dedicating this portion of M-15 to Deputy Overall memorializes the courage, respect, and honor he displayed as he performed his duties to protect Oakland County.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Section 2 of the Michigan Memorial Highway Act indicates that the state transportation department shall provide for the erection of suitable markers indicating the name of the highway only “when sufficient private contributions are received to completely cover the cost of erecting and maintaining those markers.” As a result, the bill has no state or local fiscal impact.
POSITIONS:
