PETER A. PETTALIA MEMORIAL HIGHWAY S.B. 622 (S-1):
ANALYSIS AS REPORTED FROM COMMITTEE
Senate Bill 622 (Substitute S-1 as reported)
RATIONALE
On September 12, 2016, former Michigan Representative Peter A. Pettalia was killed at the age of 61 in a motorcycle accident in northern Montmorency County. He represented Michigan's 106th House District, which includes Alcona, Alpena, Iosco, Presque Isle, and part of Cheboygan Counties. Before serving in the Michigan House of Representatives, Mr. Pettalia served as a Presque Isle Township supervisor for 16 years and a volunteer firefighter for the East Grand Lake Fire Department for 15 years. To honor and pay tribute to his public service and dedication to others, it has been suggested that a highway in Presque Isle County should be named after former Representative Pettalia.
CONTENT
The bill would amend the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate the portion of highway US-23 in Presque Isle County between Maple Drive and Misiak Highway as the "Peter A. Pettalia Memorial Highway".
The bill would take effect 90 days after it was enacted.
ARGUMENTS
(Please note: The arguments contained in this analysis originate from sources outside the Senate Fiscal Agency. The Senate Fiscal Agency neither supports nor opposes legislation.)
Supporting Argument
Representative Pettalia lived a life of public service. He was serving his third term in the Michigan House of Representatives at the time of the accident, and was the Chairperson of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Tourism and Outdoor Recreation Committee. While serving in the Michigan House of Representatives, Mr. Pettalia sponsored 19 public acts addressing many issues. He also was a founding member of the Presque Isle County Economic Development Commission and vice-chairperson of the Community Development Commission.
At the time of his death, Mr. Pettalia resided in Presque Isle Township, in Presque Isle County. Naming a highway in Presque Isle County after him would be a fitting way to commemorate and honor his legacy and dedication to Michigan residents.
