RATIONALE

Trooper Craig A. Scott was shot and killed in the line of duty on February 9, 1982. He served the Michigan State Police (MSP) for four years and, before his service with the MSP, served as a military police officer in the United States Army. It had been suggested that a portion of Highway US-127 in Ingham County be named in his honor.

CONTENT

The bill amends the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate the portion of Highway US-127 beginning at exit 56 in Ingham County and extending south to the Jackson County line as the "Trooper Craig A. Scott Memorial Highway".

The bill will take effect on March 29, 2019.

BACKGROUND

On February 9, 1982, while patrolling US-127 south of Leslie, Michigan, Trooper Scott observed a car speeding in the opposite direction. After pulling over the vehicle, which was later determined to be stolen, Trooper Scott arrested the driver for failing to produce the vehicle's registration. While placing the driver in his squad car, the passenger shot Trooper Scott and both the passenger and the driver fled. The police later apprehended the suspects and both were sentenced to life in prison.

Supporting Argument

As a veteran of the U.S. Army and the MSP, Trooper Scott was dedicated to serving his community and fellow Americans. He was the 35^th MSP officer to die in the line of duty. It is fitting recognition of Trooper Craig A. Scott's ultimate sacrifice in serving the State to name a portion of Highway US-127 in his honor.
