RATIONALE

Gunnery Sergeant Daniel J. Price, of Holland, Michigan, was killed in action while conducting combat operations in Badghis Province, Afghanistan, on July 29, 2012. He joined the Marine Corps in July 2003, and was assigned to 1st Marine Special Operation Battalion, United States Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command. He received many awards for his extraordinary military service. To honor his sacrifice, it was suggested that a portion of a highway in the City of Holland be named after Gunnery Sergeant Price.

CONTENT

The bill amends the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate the portion of Highway I-196 in the City of Holland as the "Gunnery Sgt. Daniel Price Memorial Highway".

The bill will take effect on March 29, 2019.

ARGUMENTS

(Please note:  The arguments contained in this analysis originate from sources outside the Senate Fiscal Agency. The Senate Fiscal Agency neither supports nor opposes legislation.)

Supporting Argument

Gunnery Sergeant Price was a dedicated soldier who served the United States honorably. He served six combat tours; three in Afghanistan and three in Iraq. He received a Bronze Star, a Silver Star (posthumously) a Purple Heart, a Navy and Marine Achievement Medal, three Good Conduct Medals, and three Combat Action Ribbons. His awards and promotion to the rank of gunnery sergeant in only nine years shows his dedication and heroism. Naming a highway after Gunnery Sergeant Price is a fitting way to honor his legacy as an exceptional soldier and to ensure that he is remembered.
