CONTENT

 

The bill would amend the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate the portion of Highway M-53 in Macomb County beginning at the intersection with 14 Mile Road and extending south to the intersection with 8 Mile Road as the "Det. Sgt. Christopher M. Wouters Memorial Highway".

 

The bill would take effect 90 days after its enactment.

BACKGROUND

 

Detective Sergeant Wouters was shot and killed on October 11, 2000, by a suspect who had hidden a handgun and brought it into the jail area of the Warren Police Department. The suspect, who had been arrested on a narcotics charge, was fatally shot after firing at Detective Sergeant Wouters.

 

Detective Sergeant Wouters was 42 years old when he died, and was a 19-year veteran officer. In 2008, the City of Warren officially named the Warren Police Headquarters the Christopher M. Wouters Police Headquarters Building.
