Rep. Sneller offered the following resolution
House Resolution No. 318.
A resolution to declare May 1, 2018, as Law Day in the state of Michigan.
Whereas, Law Day is an occasion of public acknowledgement of our nation’s and Michigan’s heritage of justice, liberty, and equality under the law; and
Whereas, The American justice system is charged with upholding and protecting the rights, as well as the freedom and justice of all Americans; and
Whereas, Congress issued a joint resolution in 1961 declaring May 1 as Law Day, which is a national day to recognize and celebrate our justice system and the rule of law; and
Whereas, This year’s theme recognizes the importance of a system of government with distinct and independent branches-executive, legislative, and judicial; and
Whereas, The Law Day 2018 theme, "Separation of Powers: Framework for Freedom” reminds us that each branch serves as a check on the power of the other branches; and
Whereas, Hilarie Bass, President of the American Bar Association said, “The Constitutional structure of our three part government provides a framework for our freedom, preserving liberty and advancing our rights”; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare May 1, 2018, as Law Day in the state of Michigan. We urge acknowledgement of the importance of our legal and judicial systems with appropriate ceremonies and activities, and to display the flag of the United States and the state of Michigan in support of this educational observance; and be it further
Resolved, That the citizens, schools, businesses, media, religious institutions, civic, and service organizations of the state of Michigan are encouraged to use this occasion to commemorate Law Day.
