CONTENT

The bill would amend the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate the portion of Highway M-52 beginning at the intersection with Curtis Road in the City of Adrian and extending north to the intersection with Highway M-50 as the "Trooper Byron J. Erickson Memorial Highway".

Proposed MCL 250.1006b

BACKGROUND

Trooper Byron J. Erickson became a Michigan State Police trooper in 1989 at the age of 32. On July 2, 1993, Trooper Erickson sustained injuries in an accident while in pursuit of a felon who later was apprehended and sentenced on multijurisdictional warrants. Trooper Erickson died of complications from those injuries on July 31, 1993. He was 36 years old and the 44th Michigan State Police trooper to die in the line of duty.

FISCAL IMPACT

The bill would have no fiscal impact on State or local government. The Act specifies that the Department of Transportation may provide for the erection and maintenance of markers designating the name of a highway only when sufficient private funds are available to cover the costs of erecting and maintaining those markers. As such, private funds would cover the cost of the renaming, and no State funds would be used.
