House Bill 5502 and House Bill 5503 would amend the Fire Prevention Code and the Single State Construction Code Act, respectively, to specify that a labelled fire door assembly with a temporary locking device or systems that was installed in a school building would not violate the respective Acts.

The bills are tie-barred to each other and to House Bill 4689 (see BACKGROUND).

BACKGROUND

House Bill 4689 (S-1), which was enacted as Public Act (PA) 45 of 2020, amended PA 306 of 1937, which governs the construction, reconstruction, and remodeling of school buildings. Public Act 45, among other things, allows a temporary door locking device or system to be installed in a school building. "Temporary door locking device or system" means an anchoring mechanism or system installed on the interior side of a door that, when engaged, secures the door against forced entry.
