Rabbi Steven Rubenstein of Congregation Beth Ahm of West Bloomfield offered the following invocation:

We rise today and we face the task. Each person in the world has a task, an opportunity, and a goal. Some days, our individual tasks seem monumental and we wonder how, even if, we can accomplish our goals. But we face the beginning of the day with thanks—thanks for the ability to work and for the ability to make a difference in God’s world. God has also blessed us in allowing us to share our tasks with others.

Thank you, God, for not asking us to achieve our goals alone. You have taught us that it is not good for human beings to be alone. We have brothers and sisters; we have husbands and wives; we have friends and co-workers; we have neighbors and fellow citizens. Just as surely as we know that we will respond when asked to assist someone on their way towards their goal, so too do we know that someone is nearby to help us in kind.

As we stand here at the start of this day of the Michigan State Senate, we are mindful of the challenges before us. Even as we recognize that we are among the most fortunate in the world as citizens of the United States and the state of Michigan, we also recognize that the needs of the people of Michigan are great. We ask God to grant God’s blessings on this body as they deliberate today—to grant great strength of character, discipline, and a love for humanity and for individual human beings.

Can we achieve all our goals today? Each day, we aim to make progress towards these lofty goals. But Rabbi Tarfon, a great Jewish sage, taught us, and continues to teach us even today, “It is not up to you alone to finish the work, but neither are you free to desist from it entirely.”

We take up the task now, with humility. No individual can finish the work, but perhaps with partnership, a spirit of empathy, and a recognition of the potential for holiness in all that we do, we can move our tasks forward another step today.

The President, Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist, led the members of the Senate in recital of the Pledge of Allegiance.
