Pastor Casey Arnouts of Grace Assembly of God of Fruitport offered the following invocation:

Eternal God, scripture tells us that Your power and skill are seen in creation: the beauty of the sunrise, the complexity of forests, the incredible wonder of the people who surround us. Everything You made is good. All in six days.

We are considerably less skilled, O God. It takes us a lot longer to accomplish our plans and the end product is not as good as we purpose or promise. So Lord, since You are far better at creating and managing than we, we stop and ask for your help.

God bless these Senators. Give them strength. The pressure of politics are great. Help them not to grow weary in doing good. Grant them endurance to reap the blessing of righteous work.

God grant humility. You resist the proud but give Your grace to the humble. Bless them with curiosity, honest inquiry, and increasing capacity as they learn and work together.

God grant wisdom. You’ve promised this gift to any who ask. Aid this pursuit and in wisdom may their work be done well.

God grant good cheer. We live in an awesome country and a beautiful state and this job is an incredible privilege. Uphold them with a willing spirit, O Lord. Help the wonder of service and the joy of being part of our respective communities outshine cynicism or despondency.

Compared to what You do in creation, God, the work here is modest. But since You’re good at what You do, and have offered Your help if asked, we pause and ask for strength and humility, for wisdom and good cheer. Lend Your aid, O Lord, in the honorable work before the members of this Senate.

I ask this, in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

The President pro tempore, Senator Nesbitt, led the members of the Senate in recital of the Pledge of Allegiance.
