A bill to amend 1972 PA 230, entitled

"Stille-DeRossett-Hale single state construction code act,"

(MCL 125.1501 to 125.1531) by adding section 4g.

the people of the state of michigan enact:

Sec. 4g. (1) Beginning on the effective date of the amendatory act that added this section, at the time of initial construction of a single-family dwelling or a multifamily dwelling, the builder of the dwelling shall do both of the following:

(a) Install an automatic fire sprinkler system in each path of egress for the dwelling, including, but not limited to, hallways and stairwells.

(b) Install an automatic fire sprinkler system in a basement or use a fire-resistant drywall or other fire-resistant material in the ceiling of the basement.

(2) The director shall promulgate rules that establish standards and requirements for the installation of an automatic fire sprinkler system or use of fire-resistant drywall or other fire-resistant material in a dwelling as described in subsection (1).

(3) As used in this section, "automatic fire sprinkler system" means an integrated system of underground and overhead piping designed in accordance with fire protection engineering standards that is activated by heat from a fire and discharges water over the fire area.
