SCHOOL COUNSELOR; RENEWAL S.B. 1142 (S-1):
SUMMARY OF BILL
REPORTED FROM COMMITTEE
Senate Bill 1142 (Substitute S-1 as reported)
Sponsor: Senator Dayna Polehanki
CONTENT
The bill would amend the Revised School Code to modify professional development requirements for school counselor credential renewal.
BRIEF RATIONALE
School counselors provide an important service to Michigan's elementary schools, grade schools, high schools, charter schools, private schools, and more. They are required to be credentialed by the MDE, but some believe the requirements for credential renewal are too proscriptive. For example, an elementary school counselor may not need 50 hours of professional development in college preparation and career counseling. Accordingly, it has been suggested that the requirements for school counselor credential renewal be made more flexible.
