CONTENT

 

The bill would amend the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate the portion of Highway M-50 in Monroe County beginning at the intersection with South Raisinville Road and extending east to the intersection with Herr Road as the "Animal Control Officer Darrian Young Memorial Highway".

Senate Bill 69 is a reintroduction of Senate Bill 978 from the 2023-2024 Legislative Session. Senate Bill 978 passed the Senate and was referred to the House Committee on Transportation, Mobility and Infrastructure but received no further action.

 

BACKGROUND

 

Darrian Young was born in Monroe, MI on April 29, 1996. After graduating high school, Officer Young became employed as a Monroe County animal control officer. On June 4, 2020, a drunk driver struck Officer Young’s patrol truck while she was on duty. She was transported to a local hospital and succumbed to her injuries two days later on June 6, 2020.
