CHALDEAN AMERICAN MONTH H.B. 4303:
SUMMARY OF BILL
REPORTED FROM COMMITTEE
House Bill 4303 (as reported without amendment)
Sponsor: Representative Tom Kuhn
House Committee: Government Operations
Senate Committee: Regulatory Affairs
CONTENT
The bill would designate the month of May each year as "Chaldean American Month", stating that the designation would be "in recognition of Chaldean, Assyrian, and Syriac Americans, who have made significant and valuable contributions to this state and the United States".
BRIEF RATIONALE
Chaldean Americans are an ethnic and religious group of people indigenous to Mesopotamia or modern-day Iraq. According to testimony, Michigan is home to an estimated 187,000 people who identify as Chaldean, which is the largest Chaldean population outside of Iraq. This population resides predominantly in Macomb and Oakland Counties and contributes greatly to the counties' and State's success, and so recognition of the contributions made by Chaldean Americans in Michigan has been suggested.
