The motion prevailed, a majority of the

Senator
Hoitenga offered the following resolution:
Senate Resolution No. 14.
A
resolution to commemorate March 5, 2025, as Fred Bear Day.
Whereas,
Fred Bear worked for Chrysler in Detroit before joining Ford Motor Company as a
wood carver, crafting cabinets for radio dashboards and later relocating to
Grayling, Michigan; and
Whereas,
In 1933, Fred Bear founded Bear Archery in Grayling, Michigan, which became one
of the largest archery manufacturers in the world; and
Whereas,
Fred Bear is widely regarded as a pioneer in the archery community; and
Whereas,
As a passionate advocate for wildlife conservation, Fred Bear promoted
responsible hunting practices that respect the environment, wildlife, and
fellow archers; and
Whereas, Fred Bear’s legacy extends beyond archery. He
became a cultural icon among outdoor enthusiasts, was featured in the iconic
song, “Fred Bear,” and numerous films highlighting Michigan’s great outdoors;
and
Whereas,
The commitment of Fred Bear to ethical hunting practices and conservation has
also inspired countless individuals to appreciate and respect the natural
world; and
Whereas,
March 5, 2025 marks the 123rd anniversary of Fred Bear’s birth; now, therefore,
be it
Resolved
by the Senate, That the members of this legislative body commemorate March 5,
2025, as Fred Bear Day; and be it further
Resolved,
That in recognition of Fred Bear’s contributions to archery and conservation,
we commit to upholding these values to ensure that his legacy continues to
thrive in our actions.
The question being on the adoption of
the resolution,
The resolution was adopted.
Senator Hoitenga asked and was granted
unanimous consent to make a statement and moved that the statement be printed
in the Journal.
The motion prevailed.
Senator Hoitenga’s statement is as follows:
Today I rise with
great enthusiasm in presenting this resolution designating March 5 as Fred Bear
Day in Michigan. March 5, a day devoted to honoring the legacy of an
extraordinary individual who made a profound and lasting impact not only on the
northern Michigan district I represent but also on our state and countless
people around the world.
Fred Bear worked for
Chrysler and Ford in Detroit prior to founding Bear Archery. With his wife, he
relocated to Grayling, where Bear Archery became a well-established
manufacturing employer, but Fred Bear’s legacy extends far beyond his
entrepreneurship and archery. He was a passionate advocate for wildlife
conservation and became a cultural icon, producing numerous films that
highlighted Michigan’s great outdoors. He was even featured in the iconic song,
“Fred Bear.” One of my favorite Fred Bear quotes is, “Immerse yourself in the
outdoor experience. It will cleanse your soul and make you a better person.”
Recognizing his
birthday, March 5, as Fred Bear Day not only celebrates his remarkable
achievements but also honors the spirit of adventure that he exemplified,
helping us to preserve Michigan’s natural wonders for generations to come.
Please support my Senate Resolution No. 14.
