Senator Sue Shink of the 14th District offered the following invocation:

Some may believe they will enter heaven due to their outer piety and their frequent talk of God. Matthew 7:21-23 suggests that as much as so many wish to enter heaven, yet many may not because their lives may not reflect their stated faith. Dear God, please help us—instead of speaking pious words and engaging in religious rituals without truly serving God and others—to be kind, to care for those around us, especially the most vulnerable among us. Dear God, please lead us not to worship and obey men and women who take great wealth for themselves while inflicting harm and cruelty on others, especially the poor, the refugees, and the weakest. Dear God, please lead us to care for the world You created instead of increasing profits for giant corporations or greedy billionaires; to protect the flora and fauna, as well as the people who live on this beautiful Earth by fighting pollution and human-induced climate catastrophe. Dear God, please lead us to stand firm against those who would use our differences to turn us away from each other for their own gain and to turn to those leaders who encourage us to love and care for each other, that each of us may live our best lives and that we may all have lived a life worthy of this beautiful Earth and entry into heaven. Amen.

The President pro tempore, Senator Moss, led the members of the Senate in recital of the Pledge of Allegiance.
